Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Kigali City tour

  • Arrival: on day 1 of 6 days combined Congo and Rwanda safari, you will be picked up by our company representative in Rwanda upon arrival at Kigali international airport and be transferred to your lodge in Kigali where you will check-in for a meal and relaxation.
  • Kigali city tour: Depending on your arrival time, you will, later on, have an evening Kigali city tour where you will visit some shops, and market centers then return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
  • Meal plan: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe forest National Park

  • Transfer to Nyungwe forest national park: on this second day of 6 days combined Rwanda and Congo safari, you will have to wake in the morning on a relaxed breakfast then check out of the lodge and meet your driver for a transfer to Nyungwe forest national park a home to 13 primate species. You will have an enroute lunch and then have a stop at the park headquarters first to pick the permits then proceed to the lodge for check in and enjoy your dinner.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy walk

  • Chimpanzee trekking: on the 3rd day of 6 days combined Rwanda and Congo safari, you will wake up on a cup of tea and then be transferred headquarters for a pre Chimpanzee trekking briefing then after move into the forest in search of the habituated chimpanzees as they go on their daily routine of feeding, copulating, breastfeeding, playing and on a lucky day you will be in a position to watch them nesting. After trekking these chimpanzees, return to the lodge for a meal and relax abit. 
  • Canopy walk: Once you relax abit from the fascinating chimpanzee trekking, you will then head for yet another interesting 2 hours canopy walk that starts at Uwinka and is done in Nyungwe forest. This walk is on a canopy raised at an elevation of 50 meters high above the ground. During this walk, you will be in position to view the park at glance, view different wildlife species such as chimpanzees, monkeys, elephants, different species of birds and plant species. After enjoying this walk, you will then return to the lodge for evening relaxation, dinner and have an overnight sleep.

Canopy Walks
  • Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner 

Day 4: Transfer to Gisenyi and Visit Lake Kivu

  • Transfer to Gisenyi:  on day 4 of 6 days combined Rwanda and Congo safari, wake up in the morning, enjoy your breakfast and then check out of the lodge to EXIT Nyungwe and embark on the drive to Gisenyi where you will arrive in the afternoon for late lunch. This drive is about 5-6 hours’ drive.
  • Visit Lake Kivu: you will then have a visit to Lake Kivu for different activities such as boat cruise, swimming, and the nature walks along the shores of the lake. Once the sun goes down, you will be transferred to your lodge for dinner and have an overnight sleep.

Day 5: Transfer to Virunga National park and Hike mount Nyiragongo (Ascend)

  • Hike mount Nyiragongo:  on day 5 of 6 days combined Rwanda and Congo safari, you will have to wake up as early as possible, check out of the lodge with packed lunchbox and some snacks to Cross over into Congo where you will be welcomed by a convoy in the Congo side and be transferred to the park headquarters of Virunga national park to obtain a Nyiragongo hiking permit thereafter be driven to Kibati where you will start the hike to summit the top of Mount Nyiragongo. Ensure that you are at the starting point in time since the ascent starts at exactly 10:30 am and it’s done in a group. Once your group leaves you then you have missed out. During the hike, you will view other volcanic mountains closer to Nyiragongo Mountain. While at the summit you will view Lava Lake that is situated at the peak of mount Nyiragongo. You will have an overnight in the tented camp at the summit.
  • Meal plan: Breakfast, packed lunch and Dinner at the summit

Day 6: Descend Mount Nyiragongo and Transfer back to Kigali for departures

  • Descend mount Nyiragongo: this is the last day of your 6 days Combined Rwanda and Congo safari. You are expected to wake up very early in the morning have your breakfast at the summit and meet the entire group to slope down back to Kibati at the base of the mountain. Descending will take at least 3 hours and by 10am you will be down. Once you reach to Kibati police patrol, you will be transferred to the Rwanda – Congo border where your guide will pick you up by the guide to the hotel for an enroute lunch.

Nyiragongo Volcano Hikes
  • Transfer to Kigali for departures: After having a meal, you will then be transferred to Kigali direct to the airport depending on your departures time to catch up with your flight. In case you have a night flight, you can then have a visit to the genocide memorial sites before departing.
