Birds in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park; Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is best renowned as a home for endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkey trekking not knowing that is also home to a hoven of Albertine endemic bird species with over 250 bird species thus making it one of the top birding site on Uganda birding. However, the park was gazette as a national park in 1991 to protect the critically endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and other wild species. But before the area returned to the gazetted area, the area was originally home to Batwa people who are known as hunter-gatherers till today though the Uganda of Uganda got them a place to stay –a community just around the outside park area.

The half number of bird species are endemic to the Albertine Rift Mountains. Birding in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be done throughout the year, however, the best time for bird watching is in the wet season when fruits are plenty to attract the various bird species that starts from; April to Mid-May and October to November. On a visit to the park, you can also engage in the most sought gorilla trekking or game viewing. You can opt to combine it with birding activity though gorilla trekking is best done in the drier seasons of June, July, August, Mid-September, and December to February.

A list of bird species to spot in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park includes; Whydah, Black kite, White-necked raven,Double–collared sin bird, Specked mouse bird, Paradise flycatcher, Ibis, Ruwenzori batis, Olive woodpecker, Archer’s robin –chat, Blue–headed coucal, Dusky crimson wing, Kivuground-thrush, Fire Finch Stonechat, Waxbills , Grey capped Warbler , Ruwenzori turaco , Ruwenzori nightjar , Ruwenzori batis mentioned but few.

More so, apart from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, there are quite several other parks best for bird watching in Uganda including; Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, Semuliki National park among others. Additionally, the park boasts unique mountain gorillas that attract thousands of tourists to come to visit the park. One to be able to access the natural inhabitant of mountain gorillas, you are required to buy valid gorilla permits directly from ‘’UWA’’ Uganda Wildlife Authority a body in charge of Uganda National Parks. However, gorilla trekking permits in Uganda costs USD700 per person per trek but if you’re to visit in the peak season of June to Mid –September, and December to February, we advise you to book your gorilla trekking permits in advance like 3 to 6 months before your arrival time. Golden monkey permits cost USD60 per person per day.

In general, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest among Uganda’s National parks that covers an area of about 33.7 square kilometers comprised of forested slopes and extinct volcanoes. More to that, for tourists planning to visit the park, the Virunga Mountains dominate the landscape and are quite a sight. Note, the Virungas are home to quite several wild animals and the major species to be sighted among other species are the rare mountain gorillas.

Despite this, Uganda boosts two national parks Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National park half of the world’s mountain gorilla population is found in Bwindi with a total of 650 individuals out of the remaining total of about 1065 mountain gorillas. Mgahinga is also home to golden monkey species and the vegetation in the park is rewarding as the afro montane vegetation is supported by a cool climate.
