Chimpanzee Habituation in Africa : Chimpanzee Habituation experience is one of the hallmark attractive activity done on Uganda safari except Gorilla trekking and Game drive. In Africa, this experience can only be conducted in Uganda’s Kibale forest national park renowned has the capital of primates and also habitat for more than 250 animals’ species and over 300 bird species. The park is a house of 13 primate species including black and white colobus monkey and the main selling species here known as Chimpanzees. Monkey species can often be seen from the road on away side forest as they swing on tree branches and the viewing of Chimpanzees is done in their natural tropical forest.

Kibale forest is gifted to protect the highest concentration of primate species in the entire East Africa, species to encounter include; Chimpanzees, blue monkeys, red colobus monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and baboons. It can also be done in Budongo forest in Murchison Falls national park but best for the offseason habituation.

Chimpanzee Habituation ‘’CHEX’’ in Kibale is based at Kanyanchu park headquarters .The primary attraction at Kanyanchu is the primate walk that gives our visitors a chance to track chimpanzees .Although the possibility of seeing these great apes can be 80%.Kanyanchu is the visitor’s center in Kibale national park ,with signposted on the left from Fort portal about 6kilometers before the village of Bigodi .However, chimpanzee tracking is conducted by the trained guides who is knowledgeable about the forest generally .The group of chimps in the Kanyanchu community is probably the most numbered in Kibale forest and other animals to view in the forest include bush pigs ,elephants ,buffaloes and duikers. There is possibility of seeing them because many of these species are very shy so they can easily be seen.

Despite, Chimpanzee Habituation in Kibale forest gives visitors a great chance for an extended and more personal involvement in the Kibale program or Chimpanzee Habituation. Currently, this experience has been introduced in the park, a full day encounter that enables visitors to spend more time with these unique individuals, watch them as they de-nest in the morning and nesting in the late evening, playing, grooming and feeding with picture taking. Chimpanzee Habituation Experience starts early in the morning with a briefing at the visitor’s center Kanyanchu, then after meet the park range to lead you to forest trail heads and as you will be tracking there is great chance of viewing other species found in the forest.

Once Chimpanzee are seen you will be given 4hour to stay with them in a group of 4 people learn from them as you enjoy adventurous memorable photography. After return back to the lodge. Therefore, primate’s trails will give you a gainful views and forest experience to the visitors.

Kibale National Park measures 795 square kilometers, located in western Uganda, is part of the wider Kibale Conservation Area which comprises of the Semuliki National Park and Toro- Semuliki and Katonga Wildlife Reserves. The park is 24 Kilometers east of the Rwenzori Mountains Foothills and 20 Kilometers South-east of Fort portal town in western Uganda. Kibale National Park is the primate capital of the world home to red colobus monkeys, black and white in what is probably their last viable population in Uganda.

This national park offers a remarkable biophysical environment with varied scenery including beautiful crater lakes and hills, together with the forest, swamps, primates, notable bird species and butterflies, provides knowledgeable prospect for ecotourism. Chimpanzee habituation experience cost USD200 per track per day and Chimpanzee tracking goes USD 150 per person.

Rules followed on Chimpanzee Habituation Experience-Kibale

The minimum age allowed for Chimpanzee Habituation Experience is 15 years and above and all the rules were updated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. In Kalinzu forest the minimum age is 12 years old.

Keep a distance of 7 to 8 meters in between you and the apes.

Always follow instructions given by the park ranger while in the forest

Eating and smoking in the presences of chimps is prohibited.

You should obey the limited number of people allowed.

Always keep your voices at a low level when you tend to meet them, so that you view them as they interact with each other.

Ill or sick trackers are not allowed to track because they can easily be transmitted with human diseases such as flu, cough, diarrhea. These primates share 98% DNA to humans.

Flash cameras are not allowed; they scare them away.

  Regular wearing of face masks

Sanitizing of hands and maintaining social distance of 3 to 4 meters.

The safari vehicles are regularly washed and sanitized during the day.
