How to get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park; Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is the most important tourist destination in Uganda that has impacted a lot on Uganda Tourism Hub through the money collected from gorilla permits. Fact is that, gorilla trekking is the top selling tourist attraction on Uganda safaris and most done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga National Park both located in Uganda.
Despite that, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to half world’s remaining population of unique mountain gorillas with over 650 individuals and made up of 23 habituated gorilla families that are splintered into four different gorilla sectors; Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Ruhija. One of these gorilla sectors its where gorilla trekking expedition takes place.
Location; The park is located in southwestern region of Uganda in Kanungu district.
How to get there;
By Road;
Traveling by car -from Kampala or Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park takes between 8 to 9 hours to access the region to stay at night for your next day gorilla trekking experience.
Visitors who are already on safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park – then from Queen to Bwindi is just a short drive to access the park. From Queen Elizabeth National Park to Bwindi -you can drive through Ishasha sectors -a famous sector-route to spot the famous tree climbing lions before arriving in Buhoma. The drive takes about 2 to 3 hours’ drive.
Visitors coming up from Lake Mburo National Park, the drive takes about 5 to 6 hours.
Note; Driving is the most popular way for visitors -visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for Gorilla Trekking Experience or Habituation. However, its along driving journey but rewarding as compared to Air transport.
Getting to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Kampala to Kabale to Kanungu to Buhoma
This route covers roughly 330 miles through specular landscape, includes a tarmac highway which takes about 5 to 6hours.
Kampala to Ntungamo to Rukungiri to Kihihi to Buhoma
This route sounds as one of the easiest and quickest to reach Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, covering around 240 miles.
Kampala to Kabale to Ruhija
This route connects Kampala to Kabale covering around 8 hours’ drive, before driving to Ruhija in the north eastern area of Bwindi – by gravel road through local communities.
Kampala to Kabale to Nkuringo
This is the commonly used route to access the Nkuringo region of the park. It involves driving directly from Kampala to Kabale, before accessing a bumpy mountain road through small communities, covering roughly 65miles to Nkuringo.
By Air:
Travelling by air- is the fasted away to access the Park, as we see most of visitors arrive in Uganda at Entebbe International Airport ‘’EBB’’, which covers 29 miles from the Kampala capital city. You can use a charter or scheduled domestic flight ‘’Aero link Uganda from Entebbe to fly you to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip. Then after landing to one of the local airstrips, you will be picked up by the safari driver guide to drop you to the booked lodge in or outside the park.
Those traveling to the Buhoma or Ruhija trailheads in the north of the park, lands to the closest airport ‘’Kihihi’’. Another option -can use charter flight to the Kayonza airstrip.
Visitors travelling to the southern trailheads of Rushaga and Nkuringo flies in at Kisoro. Generally, the total flight time takes around 2 hours, which are then followed by a short drive of around 1:30 hours.
