Makerere university – A Hill of the Learnt

Makerere University is built on one of the seven hills that make up Kampala City – Makerere hill. it is located in Kawempe division, North of the central business district Kampala and just 2.5kms by road.

Makerere university was established in 1922 as a humble technical school, it’s one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa. In January the same year, the school was later renamed as Uganda Technical Collage and was opened to 14 day students who begun studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics.

Makerere university can be accessed through its main Gate on Makerere Hill road about 190m west of Wandegeya Traffic lights on Bombo road.  The then Katikiro of Buganda Nsibirwa attributed to the formation of the land where the University is, because he convinced the Buganda Lukiiko to offer land to the colonial government for development.

The collage soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training, it expanded over to become a centre for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935 and in 1937 the collage started developing into an institution of higher education offering Post school certificate courses. In 1949, it became a university collage affiliated to the University college London, offering courses leading to the general degrees of its mother institution.

On July 1 1970, Makerere became an independent National University of the Republic of Uganda offering undergraduate and post graduate courses leading to its own awards. Makerere University offers not only day but also evening and external study programs to a student body about 35,000 undergraduates and 3,000 post graduates both Ugandans and foreigners and also active in Research.

Makerere hill gets its name from, one of the Buganda Royals who had a night out with a concubine and forgot to get back to the palace before dawn, upon realizing that it was dawn he exclaimed “Gano makerere” meaning it has dawn on me. Hence the name Makerere hill.

Makerere University covers 300 acres with spacious green grounds and beautiful structures that favours a good studying environment. The six university residential hall provides accommodation to the students and there are three female halls that is Mary Stuart, Complex and Africa halls. And six male halls Livingstone, Mitchell, Lumumba, Nsibirwa and University halls.
