Mulago hospital | Mulago Hill

Mulago National Referral Hospital was founded in 1913 by Albert Ruskin Cook and in 1962 it was expanded by constructing lower Mulago to offer better services and facilities to patients. It serves as a National Referral for the entire country and a general hospital as well as Health Centre IV, III for the Kampala metropolitan and the official bed capacity is 1790.
The hospital is located on Mulago hill in the Northern part of the city of Kampala, immediately west of Makerere university collage of Health sciences. It is just 5kms North-east from the city center Kampala.
The Mulago originates from a traditional local medicinal herb that is grown on this hill. The grass was used by Kabaka Sunna to protect himself from the evil spirits. It is on this hill also that Kabaka Sunna ll set up his administration capital during his reign between 1832-1856 commonly known as the reign of terror.
Mulago is a teaching hospital of the Makerere University Collage of Health Sciences. It also one of the referral hospitals in the country and the other being Butabika National Referral Hospital. It offers services in most medical and surgical sub-specialties in addition to dentistry, emergency medicine, paediatrics and intensive care.

There were also recent developments in 2014 that was estimated to last 24 months and it was financed by the African Development Bank. As part of the changes, the intensive care unit was enlarged from 5 to 25beds, the mortuary was expanded from 16 to 160 slots, the operating theatres were increased from 6 to 16. And by December 2015, the first phase of rehabilitation consisting of 40% of the total works, was reported to be complete.
Upon completion of these reconstructions, the hospital will be offering a number of services like Pedestrian, Gynaecology, child health, Diagnostic, private patient services, medical services and surgical operations like kidney and Heart surgeries. Many researchers are here carrying out different researches to ensure better service Delivery and Health lives.
Mulago hill is dominated by many hospital related facilities Research Labs, Nursing School, City Mortuary, Doctor’s Village, Pharmacies from Wandegeya and the departments of Makerere Medical School.
