New Baby Gorilla Born in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: 2021 Good news of a New year 2021 came with more fascinating new as Nkuringo Gorilla family one of the gorilla family in Nkuringo Sector with in Bwindi Impenetrable national park welcomed a birth of a New baby Gorilla born on the 4th January 2021 by the female Gorilla Nderema. With this New baby Gorilla, the total number of family members increased from 11 to 12 which is such good news to Nkuringo gorilla family, Nkuringo gorilla trekking sector as well as entire Bwindi impenetrable national park and uganda at large.
History of Nkuringo Gorilla family
Nkuringo Gorilla family is situated far in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable national park with in Nkuringo gorilla trekking sector. Nkuringo Silverback led its family till 2012 when it passed on at 45 years. At that time, Nkuringo gorilla family had 3 silverbacks including Safari who replaced his Nkuringo and led the group till he disappeared on an encounter with another Gorilla family (Bushaho) and was then replaced by Silverback Rafiki who became the dominant Silverback at that time and led the group well until he was killed on 1st June 2020 at the age of 25 years.
Silverback Rafiki was one of the dominant silverback to encounter on a Gorilla trekking safari in Uganda with in Bwindi impenetrable national park as he was indeed a friendly silverback like the name states Rafiki which means “a friend”. Apart from Safari and Rafiki, the other silverback left by Nkuringo Gorilla family was silverback Christmas who later on left the Group to begin his new life and make a new group though at times, he would return home and join his Nkuringo family. Currently, Nkuringo Gorilla family is under the leadership of a new Silverback Rwamutwe “referring to the one with a big Ego” who replaced Rafiki after his death by poachers. Nkuringo Gorilla Family now thrills with 12 members including Rwamutwe who is the new group leader, Tabu ( black back), Kamara (Black back), Muhoozi (Black back), Furaha (Adult female), Kwitonda (Adult Female), Kuhirwa (Adult Female), Kiiza (Adult Female), Nderema (Adult Female), Guma (Juvenile), Owamani (Juvenile) and the newly born baby Gorilla. Gorilla trekking in Nkuringo sector started in the year 2004 when the first gorilla family Nkuringo under the Silverback Nkuringo gorilla was habituated and ready for trekking. Habituation of Nkuringo gorilla family started in the year 1996 when it was spotted at near Nteko ridge where it used to destroy peoples crops thus rangers would chase it back to park every now and again till they resolved to training how to get used to human and ready for trekking at any given period of time. The family allows 8 trekkers per day meaning that the Uganda Wildlife Authority issues out 8 gorilla trekking permits for Nkuringo Gorilla family per day and a permit costs $700 for Foreign Non Resident, $600 for Foreign Resident, UGX. 250,000 for Ugandans and other East Africa Community members.
