Saiwa Swamp National Park Kenya : Saiwa Swamp National Park is famously known as ‘’Sanctury of the sitatunga antelopes’’ and the park is excellent haven for nature lovers. They can be viewed within tropical wetlands and mosaic of riverine forest, sedges and acacia woodlands, with fringing dense rushes and grass beds -are known as some of Kenya’s loveliest terrestrial orchids. The bronze and purple eulophia horsfallii, crimson Satyrium orchids abound, the fleshy pink Satyrium crassicaule such as the comet orchid, with greny-white flowers to peach. Epiphytic fens flourish.


This swamp is rich in dragonflies and damselflies. Beautiful butterflies like swallowtails and charaxes. The African mocker swallowtail, Papillion Dardanus, commonly seen after the rain; ants swarm the forest floor.

Reptiles and Amphibians;

There area is also habitat to various frogs and toads abound, with many different kinds of tree frogs trilling and piping after rainstorms. Bell’s hinged tortoise, a forest -dwelling species and blue- headed tree agama lizard can be seen in the park.

Snakes to see include; the forest cobra and African rock python and as you follow one of the trails within the park, watch a side-stripped chameleon and they are easy to overlook due to their perfect camouflage.

This is quite interesting activity that involves in moving foot along the different trails since there are no temporary roads leading to the park. Note; Cars are not allowed in the park. While on wildlife viewing expect to see; the sitatunga, de Brazza monkey, black and white colobus monkeys, grey duikers, blue and vervet monkeys, spotted neck otters bush back, giant forest squirrel ,genet cats many other. Other features differentiate the male sitatungas from the female sitatungas such as the color of their coats.

Saiwa Swamp National Park is located 22 kilometers away from Kitale town. From Kipsaina junction, a 5kilometer ‘’murram’’ road leads to the only park entrance, Saiwa gate.
