Susa Gorilla Group /Rwanda Gorilla Safaris – volcanoes National Park
Susa Gorilla Group: First of all, Rwanda once known as a country of a thousand hills and one of the three outstanding countries to encounter the endangered mountain gorillas in the world, that is Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mountain Gorillas are endangered wild animals and one of the largest primates, whom we share human DNA of 98% and they live in tropical rain forest and Virunga mountains.
In Rwanda, mountain gorillas can be encountered in Volcanoes national park, located in the northwestern side of Rwanda approximately few drive to access the main destination. By car from Kigali Airport can take 2 hours.
Facts, Volcanoes National Park lies within Virunga Mountains with three Virunga volcanoes such as Karisimbi, Mikeno and Bisoke.
There is total amount of 550 individuals out of 1064 individuals that still remains in the wild. These species inhabit the Virunga and are also inhabitant of the slopes of the forest which is part of volcanic mountains in Volcanoes National Park.
Volcanoes National Park boosts with a total of 10 habituated mountain gorillas fully open for tourism. Susa gorilla family is one of the 10 habituated gorilla families which can be visited in a group of 8 visitors per day and there is limited one hour given to the trekkers to spend with the gorilla family.
The Susa family inhabits at relatively higher altitude and is one of the largest and most difficult mountain gorilla groups to trek.
More so, Susa family is a famous gorilla group where Dian Fossey an American Zoologist carried out research and study purposes in the country of Rwanda, same woman who carried out Research Center which is based at Karisoke.
The Susa family was the largest among the ten gorilla families with over 42 members though recently it has reduced to 30 members including 3 male gorillas and 3 silverbacks.

This gorilla family was named after the River called Susa that flows its water in the areas where this gorilla gamily lives. In spite the fact, Susa family is very popular on Gorilla Trekking Safari in Rwanda, this is because of her twin mountain gorillas called ‘’Impano and Byishimo’’. Susa gorilla family is one of the oldest habituated gorillas which can be encountered in their groups.
However, those wishing to take part in gorilla trekking in this gorilla family, you need to be physically fit and capable to ascend and descend back to the park headquarters to be drop back to the lodge or drive back to the Airport for your flight departure. One needs to hike for a long period of time.
